Academic Internal Medicine Week 2024 Precourses

All precourses will be held Sunday, April 14, 2024.

Precourses offer small-group learning and problem solving in an intensive, day-long session. An additional fee is required. Space is limited.

Women in Medicine Leadership Development Forum

8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The Women in Medicine Leadership Development Forum will provide AAIM women faculty and administrators important guidance in their professional career development, as well as advise on effective ways to create pathways to advance their careers, evolve as leaders, and develop networks which can serve as an entrée to opportunities for coaching, mentoring and engagement.

Target Audience

Program content is relevant for women at most career levels—chairs, division leaders, clinician educators, physician scientists, business and research administrators, program administrators and coordinators—in departments of internal medicine at academic medical centers and community-based teaching hospitals.

New Business Administrators Precourse "Managing the Tripartite Mission in Academic Medicine"

8:30 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.

New Business Administrators Precourse provides internal medicine business administrators and their associated divisions an overview of the management aspects involved in the tripartite mission of internal medicine: research, education, and patient care. The precourse will be interactive and engaging, with speakers and open panel discussions.

Target Audience

New and experienced department or division business administrators; new practice plan and research administrators may also find the precourse of interest.

New Clinical Course Leaders Precourse

8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

This precourse will help develop skills relevant to internal medicine clerkship directors, associate clerkship directors, ambulatory directors, site directors and clinician-educators involved in the medicine clerkship and/or subinternship. Experienced faculty will lead discussions about evaluation and grading, curriculum development, giving and receiving meaningful feedback, and hot topics related to clinical course directors.

Target Audience

UME leaders including but not limited to clerkship, subinternship director, and/or course leaders.

Managing a Fellowship Training Program: A Walk Through Program Planning From Start to Finish

8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The interactive precourse is designed to provide fellowship program directors, associate program directors, and core faculty with a comprehensive one-day overview of key topics within fellowship training. Participants will develop a better understanding of how to manage and successfully run a fellowship program including but not limited to: 

  • building awareness for key events throughout the academic year
  • recruitment and interviewing best practices 
  • utilizing the fellowship leadership team 
  • hear from ACGME leadership 
  • developing a process to assess faculty clinical teaching 
  • understanding pertinent wellness issues at the fellowship level 
  • identifying the unique aspects of working with international medical graduates

Target Audience

New and experienced fellowship program directors or other faculty or program leadership supporting fellowship training.

Helping Your Learners Grow and Succeed: Remediation Strategies for Struggling Learners

8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

This interactive precourse provides GME (residency program directors, associate program directors, faculty) and UME (clerkship directors, clinical leaders, UME core faculty) with an intense one-day educational experience led by experienced faculty and staff. Participants will develop a “toolbox” of practical knowledge and skills including but not limited to:

  • remediating clinical skills
  • improving interpersonal and communication skills
  • remediation across the UME to GME transition
  • remediating professionalism

Target Audience

Residency program directors, associate program directors, faculty, clerkship directors, clinical leaders, UME core faculty.
