Aging

As the first wave of baby-boomers turns 65, there is a shortage of geriatricians trained to care for them. Because of the shortage, an elderly patient will go to his or her specialists for most of their medical needs. Unfortunately, most specialists are not trained to care for the geriatric patient.

Understanding this problem, ASP developed two initiatives to educate and prepare specialists to care for elderly patients. Through the T. Franklin Williams Scholars Program and the Integrating Geriatrics into the Specialties of Internal Medicine projects, ASP aims to embed geriatrics and gerontology into the specialties of internal medicine.

ASP Aging Project

The Association of Specialty Professors (ASP) began the "Integrating Geriatrics into the Specialties of Internal Medicine: Moving Forward from Awareness to Action" project after receiving a generous $2.6 million grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation. ASP received additional support ($250,000 for the project from Atlantic Philanthropies (USA) Inc.

The four-year project seeks to achieve the goal of embedding geriatrics and gerontology into the specialties of internal medicine by:

  • Expanding research efforts through National Institutes of Health meetings
  • Continued professional development of T. Franklin Williams Scholars
  • Putting resources to work constructively

Past NIH Meetings

  • 2014 ASP Aging Research for Junior Faculty Workshop
  • ASP Workshop on Wound Repair and Healing in Older Adults
  • 2013 ASP Aging Research for Junior Faculty Workshop
  • ASP Workshop on Diabetes Mellitus and Cardiovascular Disease in Older Adults

Special Interest Groups' Quarterly Calls

Conference Call Archive

Spring Conference Call featured Brent C. Williams, MD, Teresita Hogan, MD, and Roseanne Leipzig's, MD, successes in identifying geriatric competencies and integrating those competencies into educational material for members of the respective specialty societies.

Summer Conference Call featured the successes Karen E. Hall, MD, Sita Chokhavatia, MD, and Richard Saad, MD, have had in integrating geriatric competencies into fellowship curriculums and curriculum resources.

Fall Conference Call featured discussion led by Cathleen Colon-Emeric, MD, regarding possible research tools and resources available from the American Geriatrics Society. Also Kevin P. High, MD, led a discussion on possible collaborations with ASP.

Incorporating Competencies Focused on the Older Population into the Fellowship Curriculum: An ASP How-To Guide
In an effort to promote the development of geriatric special interest groups within the specialty societies of internal medicine and tofoster geriatric education initiatives, ASP developed a curriculum overview. ASP has assembled a “How-To Guide” that provides methods for incorporating competencies pertaining to the elderly into the fellowship curricula.

Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce
In Chicago, IL, on May 7, 2009, a group of 53 medical educators representing many United States Certification Boards, Residency Review Committees, and Medical Societies, met to review and approve a White Paper intended to promote Recommendation 4.2 of the IOM report of Apr. 14, 2008: “Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce”. This white paper proposes that all ABMS Member Boards whose Diplomates participate in the care of the elderly patient select the floor competencies enumerated by the AAMC that apply to their specialty and add or subtract those completed during their trainees’ initial (“intern”) year and then define those needed in subsequent years of residency and ultimate practice. This would then fulfill the requirements of Recommendation 4.2 above.

T. Franklin Williams Scholars Program

Through strong partnerships with specialty societies and the generous commitment of the Atlantic Philanthropies (USA) Inc., and support of The John A. Hartford Foundation, ASP developed a research award program to build a workforce prepared to care for the growing population of older individuals. Designed for specialists in the early years of their first faculty appointment, ASP partners with 12 internal medicine specialty societies to offer the Williams awards in 12 specialties, including general internal medicine. Since 2003, the T. Franklin Williams Scholars Program has supported more than 100 awards to internal medicine junior faculty specialists.

The T. Franklin Williams Scholars program support for funding professional development plan ended in 2015. AAIM encourages GEMSSTAR applicants to contact the specialty society relevant to your research to receive information on other funding opportunities to support a professional development plan.
