The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the Association of American Medical Colleges have released the 2009 report “Charting Outcomes in the Match.” The report presents match statistics and data on the characteristics of applicants who matched to their preferred specialty in the 2009 main residency match.
Aside from providing information on the number of applicants, available positions, and match rates, the report provides tables and charts comparing 12 measures across 19 specialties and the transitional year. The report also provides individual data on each specialty.
One measure studied in the report is the percentage of matched US allopathic seniors who have a graduate degree. According to the report, 4.7% of matched US allopathic seniors in internal medicine have a PhD, and 11.2% have another graduate degree. While the percentage of matched US seniors with another graduate degree has increased slightly from 10.6% in the 2007 match, the percentage with a PhD has decreased from 5.8%.
Examples of other measures are:
-
USMLE Step 1 scores of matched applicants.
-
Mean number of research experiences.
-
Percentage of matched applicants who are AOA members.
-
Mean number of volunteer experiences (new measure).
-
Mean number of work experiences (new measure).
