Psychological safety is now more important than ever in a team environment, whether that's a clinical team or an administrative team. The need and value for everyone to contribute and be included is vital and it takes dedicated effort to create such inclusive environments. The presenters developed a framework (BELIEVE), inspired by the popular show Ted Lasso, to outline the important features and deliberate actions we can take to create psychological safety. With each piece of the framework presenters will go through simulated cases for discussion and reflection.

Experiencing trauma events has been shown to profoundly impact the way an individual interacts with their work and learning environments – leading to learning challenges, struggles with professionalism, and difficulties managing conflict. Over the last decade, a trauma informed approach has been advocated for in the fields of health care, education, social services and law enforcement and many others as a way to understand and attend to individuals affected by traumatic experiences. A trauma informed cultural shift is a necessary first step in creating a diverse and inclusive culture. 
  
This webinar will use the framework of a Trauma Informed Approach developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration to evaluate current residency practices and collaboratively discuss how to apply these principles in the day-to-day function of GME. This webinar will discuss the prevalence of traumatic events, understand the definition of trauma, review the neurobiology of trauma, understand and identify the impact of trauma on function, and discuss how to approach a person who has been affected by an event. Presenters will define and propose solutions to support a safe learning environments by prioritizing resident autonomy, self-efficacy and interconnectedness and will re-frame resident and faculty behaviors through a Trauma Informed lens. The webinar also review administrative practices and evaluate how they may impact the residency programs and individual trainees. Participants will complete the webinar with a new understanding of their colleagues and trainees and will be empowered to apply these principles in their own programs.
