AAMC Survey Highlights Experience of Women Staff in Medical Schools

The recent report AAMC StandPoint Surveys: State of Medical School Staff Engagement 2021–2025 highlights differences in the experiences of women and men staff working at medical schools. The report found that women staff were significantly less likely than men to participate in formal mentoring — 36.2% compared with 41.3%. Women staff were also more likely to experience at least one symptom of burnout: 28.3% compared with 21.8% of men staff.

These findings can help medical schools identify opportunities to better understand and address the factors shaping women’s workplace experiences. The report offers practical steps institutions can take to strengthen engagement and well-being, from expanding access to formal mentoring and career development to recognizing staff accomplishments and better supporting supervisors.
