"Sizing Up" Internal Medicine Training Programs in UME and GME Programs

September 2026

The 2025 APDIM Annual Survey of Residency Program Directors found that among community and military teaching hospitals exclusively, size—based on approved positions and total faculty—tracked similarly based on original accreditation year. For example, the mean and median number of approved resident positions among community programs accredited from 1976 onward were 40.6 and 36, respectively, compared to 59.6 and 40 among programs accredited prior to that year (p<0.001).

This month’s Data in Brief compares LCME-accredited US medical schools by select characteristics of their internal medicine residency training program, based on the most recently completed academic year (2025) of Alliance survey data.

The mean and median number of ACGME-approved resident positions among private medical schools were 115.6 and 117, respectively, compared to 96.0 and 90 among public schools (p=0.010). Medical schools accredited by ACGME from 1976 onward were comparatively smaller in number of resident positions as well as total physician and non-physician faculty associated with the residency program (p<0.001).
