FY 2028 Call for AAIM Board Nominations

The Alliance is conducting a call for self-nominations to serve on the FY 2028 AAIM Board of Directors. There are three available positions:

  • AAIM Board Member At Large: three-year term, renewable once
  • AAIM Treasurer: two-year term, renewable once
  • AAIM President-Elect: three-year term, must have prior service on the AAIM Board

All applications are due no later than September 30, 2026. All applicants will be required to log into www.IM.org to access their member profile and complete the nomination form. Submitted applications can be reviewed by logging into MyProfile and selecting "Submittals."

These exciting new opportunities are presented to members as the Alliance continues the transition to its new governance model. The AAIM Board of Directors is responsible for strategic planning, financial accountability, and oversight of program alignment in fulfilling the strategic plan. The principal responsibilities and specific duties of the board members can be found below in the detailed descriptions.

The Alliance seeks board governance that represent the broad diversity of its membership, in terms of individual sex, race, gender identity, ethnicity, and sexual orientation as well as faculty and staff appointment, institution type, program size, clinical setting, patient population, and location.

Any current Alliance member in good standing is eligible to self-nominate to serve as AAIM Board Member At-Large. Review the responsibilities and specific duties (PDF download) of a Board Member At Large. Applicants should be engaged members who are committed to the AAIM mission and able to evidence the expected competencies:

  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills. AAIM At-Large Board Members are effective oral and written communicators and are skilled listeners. They are willing to engage in constructive dialogue and adapt to new ideas; actively solicit, receive, and incorporate feedback; seek consensus without compromising core values; demonstrate flexibility when faced with differing viewpoints; encourage innovation; and respect the diversity of members at the individual, program, and institution levels. AAIM At-Large Board Members demonstrate capacity to manage emotions and relationships effectively; demonstrate empathy in discussions and conflict resolution; maintain professionalism during disagreements; and build trust and rapport across diverse academic and clinical settings.
  • Problem Solving and Decision Making. AAIM At-Large Board Members possess a combination of the ability to solve problems, build consensus, make decisions, and communicate the rationale for planned changes. They demonstrate the ability to analyze complex issues and contribute to sound, evidence-based decisions; use data and stakeholder input to guide decisions; and balance short-term needs with long-term strategic goals.
  • Leadership and Governance. AAIM At-Large Board Members demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a group, prioritizing organizational goals over personal agendas. They are facile at setting and refining long-term strategic direction and are aware of external and interdisciplinary trends. They foster a collaborative and inclusive board culture to achieve shared goals in a productive environment and understand the legal and fiduciary responsibilities of board membership. AAIM At-Large Board Members are committed to ethical conduct and equitable governance.
  • Commitment to AAIM Mission, Values, and Community. AAIM At-Large Board Members are fully accountable to the Alliance community, mission, and core values. They value diversity of perspectives and backgrounds; they facilitate inclusion of a breadth of ideas; and are collaborative and open-minded. All board members are expected to attend six meetings annually (usually three in person and three online).

  • Financial and Business Acumen. As a fiduciary for the Alliance, the AAIM Treasurer will possess expert financial oversight skills for organizational management as aided by the work of the AAIM Finance and Audit Committee and Alliance staff, including financial statement and budget development and interpretation; financial forecasting; cash management; investments and long term funding; identifying, assessing, and managing financial risk
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills. The AAIM Treasurer is an effective oral and written communicator and is a skilled listener. They are willing to engage in constructive dialogue and adapt to new ideas; actively solicit, receive, and incorporate feedback; seek consensus without compromising core values; demonstrate flexibility when faced with differing viewpoints; encourage innovation; and respect the diversity of members at the individual, program, and institution levels. The AAIM Treasurer demonstrates capacity to manage emotions and relationships effectively; demonstrate empathy in discussions and conflict resolution; maintain professionalism during disagreements; and build trust and rapport across the board of directors, the finance committee, and the association staff.
  • Problem Solving and Decision Making. The AAIM Treasurer possesses a combination of the ability to solve problems, build consensus, make decisions, and communicate the rationale for planned changes. They demonstrate the ability to analyze complex issues and contribute to sound, evidence-based decisions; use data and stakeholder input to guide decisions; and balance short-term needs with long-term strategic goals.
  • Leadership and Governance. The AAIM Treasurer demonstrates the ability to work effectively within a group, prioritizing organizational goals over personal agendas. The AAIM Treasurer is expected to attend six board meetings annually (generally three in person and three online) as well as serve on the AAIM Executive Committee, which meets six times annually via Zoom. The AAIM Treasurer also chairs the AAIM Finance Committee, which meets four times annually via Zoom.

AAIM President-Elect AAIM President-Elect is a three-year term that graduates to president and past president annually. The term of service would be July 1, 2027, through June 30, 2030. Review the responsibilities and specific duties (PDF download) of the AAIM Board President.

Any individual who served on the AAIM Board of Directors between July 1, 2010, through the present time is eligible to submit an application to serve as president-elect. Applicants should be engaged members who are committed to the AAIM mission and able to evidence the expected competencies:

  • Strategic Mindset. The AAIM President-Elect understands the breadth and depth of academic internal medicine and can position the Alliance to support member institutions now and in the future. The individual has experience thinking “big picture” or long range and understands importance of being strategic. The AAIM President-Elect is able to discern opportunities to strengthen the position of the Alliance and promote its mission through growth and alignment of resources.
  • Communication and Collaboration. The AAIM President-Elect will operate as a “pivot point” in a matrixed organization, engaging in inspiring, persuasive, meaningful, and sometimes difficult conversations with the Board, CEO, Alliance constituents, and external partners. This individual possesses the ability to communicate clear and motivating messages in oral and written formats in one on one and group settings to bring membership together on the common mission of the organization. The AAIM President-Elect is available and actively engaged, demonstrates strong listening skills, is flexible to accommodate diverse stakeholders.
  • External Relationships and Coalition Building. The AAIM President-Elect can build and maintain strong external partnerships and leverage professional networks to further the mission of the Alliance and advance strategic priorities.
  • Organizational Accountability. The AAIM President-Elect can create and maintain a strong sense of belonging for all members (institutional and individual of the Alliance). The AAIM President-Elect will ensure that all serving on the Board are actively engaged in hearing diverse perspectives from members and bringing those perspectives to AAIM decision making. The AAIM President-Elect can effectively communicate why decisions are best for the organization as a whole.
  • Volunteer Leadership, Governance, and Stewardship. The AAIM President-Elect has leadership and governance experience and can successfully facilitate discussion that builds consensus, promotes decision making, and completes work. As a fiduciary for the Alliance, this individual will possess appropriate financial literacy for organizational management as aided by the work of the AAIM Finance and Audit Committee and Alliance staff. The AAIM President-Elect has experience leading in a dynamic landscape and is comfortable navigating the evolving AAIM governance structure and external environment. The AAIM President-Elect is able to adapt leadership style or approach to the demands of situation; able to lead at multiple levels: personal, interpersonal, team, organizational; and willing to take the lead on addressing interests of academic internal medicine among internal constituencies and external stakeholders.

The AAIM President-Elect is expected to attend six board meetings annually (generally three in person and three online) as well as serve on the AAIM Executive Committee, which meets six times annually via Zoom. The AAIM President-Elect will also chair the AAIM Advisory Group, which will meet four to six times annually, most likely via Zoom.

All applicants are required to complete the online form to evidence experience with the expected competencies and to submit a CV or resume. Up to three candidates will be invited to participate in an interview with the AAIM Nominating Committee on Friday, November 13, 2026.

Deadline

All applications are due no later than September 30, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EDT. Due to timeline constraints, no exceptions will be made to the deadline.

Review and Decision

All nominations will be reviewed by the AAIM Nominating Committee and a ballot will be recommended to the AAIM Board of Directors in January. An uncontested ballot will be presented for approval to AAIM members in February. All applicants will be notified about their status no later than February 1, 2027.
