MENTORing Matters: A Guide for New Faculty

October 15, 2026, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM | Webinar

Mentorship is a critical component in every facet of the medical journey. While mentoring can take many forms, the aims are ultimately to guide mentees toward success to achieve their goals within the domains of clinical practice, research, and personal development. For fourth year medical students (MS4s), this mentorship becomes particularly useful as they approach a significant transition in their career. Effective mentorship at this stage can help guide MS4s toward intern readiness, provide clarity on their personal and professional identity, and instill confidence. Having a framework for mentoring students at this critical stage can help ensure students are offered the support they need. This webinar will equip faculty members with the tools and insights to effectively mentor and support MS4s who are committed to internal medicine during this transitional period.

This webinar will begin by exploring core domains for mentoring MS4s with a focus on residency application preparation and career guidance. Presenters will then examine mentee preferences regarding mentorship content and styles, emphasizing that medical students highly value honesty, responsiveness, and professional connections from their mentors.

Presenters will introduce the novel M-MENTOR framework for building an effective mentor-mentee relationship, setting expectations, fostering psychological safety, and navigating challenges. The webinar will end with a discussion of common pitfalls mentors may experience and an opportunity for shared reflection. Participants will leave this webinar with a handout detailing strategies to provide effective mentoring using the M-MENTOR framework.
