As a candidate for President-Elect of the Association of Specialty Professors, I bring a proven track record of accomplishments and excellence in academic medicine, leadership, and medical education. A Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and the Interim Co-Chair of the Division of Public Health, Infectious Diseases and Occupational Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, my career spanning over 25 years is marked by prolific scholarship and research contributions in infectious diseases (recipient of the Ed Nowakowski Senior Memorial Clinical Virology Award from the Pan American Society for Clinical Virology) and medical education, coupled with a dedication to clinical practice excellence (recipient of the Distinguished Mayo Clinician). As an awarded teacher and educator (Clinical Teacher of the Year, Infectious Diseases Society of America [IDSA]; Teacher of the Year, Mayo Fellows Association), I have demonstrated unwavering commitment to shaping the next generation of medical professionals, ensuring they receive the highest caliber of training, education and mentorship. My leadership as a recognized program director (Program Director of the Year, Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education) allowed me to effectively guide our fellowship programs, fostering a learning environment that promotes innovation, inclusivity, and excellence in training. My service on the Mayo Graduate Medical Education Committee and the IDSA Training Program Directors Executive Committee reflects my ability to collaborate at the highest levels to influence policy and drive meaningful improvements in medical education. In this regard, I am now serving my second term as the IDSA representative to the Association of Specialty Professors. These accomplishments underscore my passion for advancing the mission of the Association of Specialty Professors (and the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine), and I am eager to bring this expertise to serve our diverse members. As President-Elect, I will advocate for continued excellence, inclusivity and innovation in medical education of Internal Medicine subspecialties, advocate for resources and policies that support subspecialty training and practice, support the academic career development of subspecialty faculty, and foster collaboration among our diverse Internal Medicine subspecialties to enhance our academic mission. Together, we can shape a brighter future for Internal Medicine subspecialty education and clinical practice.
