Alliance Committees & Task Forces

AAIM Competencies Task Force

Charge:

This task force is charged to identify a set of internal medicine competencies that will be followed across
the educational continuum from student through residency and fellowship.

Co‐Chairs: Steven R. Barczi, MD (ASP) and Nadia J. Ismail, MD, MPH, MEd (CDIM)

Task Force Update (as of July 2022)

  • The task force reviewed Milestones 2.0 and conducted a ranking exercise that resulted in prioritization of 14 IM milestones and initiated an EPA to milestones mapping exercise. From those 14 milestones, the task force selected Professionalism 1: Professional Behavior and Interpersonal 2: Interprofessional and Team Communication. A mockup of the observed actions, skills, and knowledge associated with these two competencies will be developed and translated into a milestone rubric.
  • In June, ACGME executives Eric Holmboe, MD, and Laura Edgar, EdD, CAE, joined the task force call to provide feedback and guidance on the work group’s progress.
  • The task force will conduct a literature review and develop a list of desirable skills and aptitudes that MS4s ideally would have obtained by graduation. The task force will examine internal medicine bootcamps for topics since these IM orientation experiences can offer valuable perspectives about the preparedness of incoming interns. The task force will coordinate with the Learner Handoff Standards Task Force to ensure there is no overlap in bootcamp/capstone topics.
